Responsibilities
Here are the basic responsibilities of the guild.
- You must hide no information from fellow members regarding places/quests.
Quests also means the general quest of becoming a strong and wealthy adventurer. Be especially willing to light the path to success for your fellow Explorers. (Careful about problem solving quests—no spoilers that aren’t asked for!)
- Respect the wisdom of the Guild.
Your knowledge of the paths and secrets of the land are an asset. The Explorers are well known for their knowledge of hidden secrets and the whole land—consider sharing this knowledge one-on-one, rather than posting and shouting it to the world.
- Guide the lost and the weary.
Part of being an Explorer is traversing the quickest and safest routes from one place to another, and being familiar with the lay of the land. If a traveller is lost or in trouble, or a stranger needs a guide, you should always be willing to lend a hand. Although you should help any grateful soul, few travellers should expect your services for nothing in return.
- Do not interfere with the matters of other guilds.
We can offer you the shelter and protection of the Explorers only while you walk our path true. We consider even the rogue professions as honourable; but abuse, sabotage and obstruction against the will of other guilds is not our way.
You may join professional or religious organizations, so long as they do not prevent you from following the guild responsibilities. You should inform the guild of other organizations you belong to that could cause a conflict of interest.
Roleplay
We strongly encourage all Explorers to roleplay, but we understand that it takes time to become comfortable enough with your character to begin developing their personality and background. Many of us learned most of our roleplaying skill entirely in PlaneShift, and we’d be happy to help you however we can.
The PlaneShift setting is extremely key to our guild, being Explorers—we seek to discover the world. If you have any questions about the setting, don’t hesitate to ask your fellow guildmates, or any overseers.
We do expect you to use brackets or parenthesis to distinguish OOC text (spoken as a player) from IC text (spoken as your character). Particularly, the /say and /shout channels are IC unless bracketed; /tell is OOC unless negotiated otherwise. /guild is typically OOC.
Alternate Characters
Please be open and honest about any alternate characters you play regularly, and let people know that you’re the same person in real life. Hiding your true identity from others typically only leads to hurt feelings and broken relationships—in one extreme case, where someone pretended to be two people, a member was expelled, and a year later, several people still refuse to speak to one another.
We expect your alternate characters to be unguilded—joining other guilds will likely cause a conflict of interest. We also expect your main character to be in the Explorers. That said, if you’d like to switch to a different character, we are usually flexible about letting you switch.
It is possible to have multiple characters in the Explorers, but all of them must be roleplayed properly. We like to avoid this for the most part.
Inactivity
Keep up with the Forum. It’s vital—the forum is our primary means of communicating aside from PlaneShift itself. We definitely will understand if you need to disappear for a time—”real life” should always take priority. However, we’d appreciate it if you’d leave us a note before you vanish!
If you are not in-game nor on the forums for two months, you may be removed from the guild, simply to keep things in order. Just contact us when you return.
Also, be sure to keep your email address up to date in the forum, should we need to contact you.
